Migration is a usual state for many animals, but espcially the Humpback Whales. These gentle giants swim hundreds of thousands of kilometres every year from the icy cold waters of the Antartica to warmer waters in the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans in order to birth their young. This beautiful mother-to-be has migrated acrosss the world's oceans, she is rising up to the surface to catch her breath before beginning her deep dive to bring her calf life. It's also here that she sheds her old and dead skin, it floats softly in the water resembling an old, torn up veil; Reflecting what is secret and hidden from view - a new beginning.
The first monotype is a stormy sea of textures in blue and black hues. Next, the whale monotype is created using a mix of blue and green ink which when printed on the cream coloured paper gives an unusal warmth to an otherwise very cool blue. Layered togther with the soft black, these two plates work well together to create deep colour tones that appear to be moving like waves and foam in the ocean. The gorgeous dripping effect for the shedding skin was created by sprtizing the whale monotype with water moments before printing it. The map is of the North West coast of Australia.
